The Shallow Cross by it’s default play design creates and high/low read between the two crossing routes and the deep in route. We are going to make a few hot route adjustments to create a flood concept to the left side of the field.
The pass defense used is the Nickel Normal – Cover 3.
To set the play up, we hot route the split end on a out route. We then smart route him to extend his out route to the first down marker.
Next, we hot route the slot receiver on a streak route.
By doing these pre-snap hot route adjustments, we now have created a flood concept to the left side of the field. Notice in the image above, the flat defender will cover the runningback running the swing route to the left side of the field. The right cornerback, will drop back deep to cover the slot receiver’s streak, who was sent in motion to the left.
By making these two hot route adjustments this opens up the deep out that is run by the slot receiver.
In the image above, we show what the play looks like after the ball is snapped.
Once the slot receiver breaks towards the side line, we throw him the ball.

Final Thoughts
When making the throw, watch for the flat defender. He may sink back to try and defend the pass. In the video breakdown, we talk about attacking Cover 2 and Cover 4 coverages.
