In this Xs and Os Football video breakdown, we take a look at a passing play that Chicago ran against Tampabay. We call this play Singeback Trips TE – PA X Post Z Seam. The play has Chicago’s quarterback hitting the Z receiver for a 23 yard pass play over the deep middle early in the 3rd quarter.
The Singleback Trips TE PA Z Post Z Seam has the quarterback faking the handoff to the halfback, who then runs a flat route to the right. The X receiver runs a 10-12 yard post, while the Z receiver runs a seam route down the left hash mark.
The defensive coverage called is Cover 3. The right cornerback, free safety, and left cornerback play 3 deep coverage. There are five defenders playing coverage underneath. The strong side defensive tackle drops into the right flat.
What made this play work was the two linebackers initially bite on the play fake. By them doing do, they are unable to get enough depth to cover the X receiver as he breaks towards the post. The free safety is force to cover the Z receiver’s seam route.
The quarterback locates the X receiver as he breaks towards the post.
