PhillyRon posted an article over at Hot1079Philly.com about why he thinks the Saints Bounty Program should be allowed.
The following is an excerpt from that post.
“Over the weekend news broke on how former Saints Defensive Coordinator, Greg Williams implemented a pay for hits bounty program for many of the defenses he was in charge of. Judgmental fans around the country as well as many sports reporters and former players rushed to chime in.
For some strange reason people act surprised that this type of behavior exist in football, one of the most violent sports. I know as a sports society we don’t celebrate explosive hits on NFL highlight shows and nickname segments “Jacked Up.” I know we don’t celebrate players like former Eagles Free Safety, Brian Dawkins, for crushing blows he has put on opposing players, ala the Mike Vick playoff hit, Or the Alge Crumpler hit. That would be to barbaric.
I’m led to believe that even people in the media will jump to express a negative opinion on anything if they think it will help them look good and in turn help them get paid. Make no mistake about it the more attention a media figure gets the more they gain leverage in negotiating a contract. It’s the same in football. The more a defensive player is shown in explosive hit highlights the more likely it is that could lead to pro bowl votes. Pro Bowl appearances lead to escalator clauses in contracts and bigger pay days. One way or another a defensive player will be rewarded for big hits.”
