In Super Bowl LVI there was a huge a defensive play that led to a sack of Joe Burrow by Rams linebacker Ernest Jones. The sack happened in late in 3rd quarter around the 5:30 mark. It was second down and 6.
Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris called a zone blitz that featured defenders rushing the quarterback.
The Cincinnati Bengals had a play called that sent out five receivers. The two outside receivers (Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd) on the left both ran in routes while the tight end Drew Sample, ran what looked like a curl to create a high-low read for Burrow. On the right side, receiver Ja’Marr Chase, ran an out route. Running back Joe Mixon ran a delay curl out of the backfield.
Mixons first responsibility was to make sure that no inside rusher got through thw A-Gap. In this case it was Jones, he was responsible for blocking.
Once the ball is snap Mixon recognizes that Jones is blitzing and shooting through the A-Gap
Mixon actually picks up Jones at the line of scrimmage as shown in the image above.
Unfortunately for Mixon, Jones is still able get up after being blocked and go straight after Burrow.
Burrow looks to find an open receiver but the coverage holds up and there is no receiver open for him to throw to.
The result is Bengals Burrow is sacked by Jones for 7-yard loss and a third-and-long situation.
